Ida Gerhardt was a Dutch poet and classicist whose work influenced post-symbolist poetry in the Netherlands. Trained in classical languages, she translated Latin authors and later rendered the Psalms directly from Hebrew, a project that resulted in a version adopted by liturgies and by sacred musicians. Her poetry combines classical learning, formal rigor, and a keen sensitivity to the watery landscapes of the northern Netherlands, a theme especially present in pieces written during her time in Kampen.
Gerhardt’s intellectual life was closely linked to Marie van der Zeyde, a long-time partner and collaborator with whom she shared studies and translation projects. Her poetic output, begun in the 1930s and established after the Second World War, includes notable volumes such as Kosmos and Het Veerhuis; the latter contains the well-known poem Het Carillon, inspired by the occupation.
In addition to her creative work, Gerhardt devoted herself to teaching and to pedagogical adaptations of classical languages. Her translation of the Psalms, published in the 1970s, had wide impact and a lasting liturgical presence, being used in monastic communities and musical settings, which underlines her role as a translator and mediator between classical tradition and contemporary practice.
