Zita of Bourbon-Parma was a princess of Parma who, upon marrying Archduke Charles in 1911, became Empress Consort of Austria and Queen Consort of Hungary, Croatia and Bohemia during his brief reign from 1916 to 1918. Born into European royal families, her position placed her at the center of the political and dynastic tensions of the First World War, a period in which the Austro‑Hungarian monarchy faced deep crises. During the war, Zita accompanied her husband and raised a large family under adverse circumstances; the deposition of the Habsburgs in 1918 forced the couple into exile, first in Switzerland and later on Madeira, where Charles died in 1922. A young widow, Zita became a leading figure for the exiled dynasty, preserving Charles I’s memory and public image. A devout Catholic educated in a multilingual aristocratic environment, she was also marked by family divisions on opposite sides of the conflict and by efforts to reconcile dynastic tradition with the postwar currents of change. Her legacy is chiefly that of a symbol of continuity for the House of Habsburg and guardian of the imperial memory throughout the long life that followed exile.
