Maria Teresa of Braganza was an Infanta of Portugal — the eldest child of D. João VI and Carlota Joaquina — whose life was shaped by dynastic marriages, political involvement, and long periods of exile. She first married her cousin D. Pedro Carlos in Brazil and was widowed young; later she contracted a second marriage with her uncle D. Carlos, a union that brought her closer to Spanish Carlism. Of a conservative temperament, she actively supported the Miguelist cause in Portugal and the Carlist cause in Spain, taking part in the nineteenth-century dynastic disputes and becoming a prominent figure in the First Carlist War. As a result of these positions, she was legally excluded from the Spanish line of succession in 1837, a measure that also affected her son and other relatives. For many years she lived in exile at various European courts, from which she issued manifestos and proclamations in defense of the Carlist claimants; her Letter to the Spaniards (1864) is one of the best-known texts from this period. She died in Trieste in 1874, leaving a legacy tied to dynastic traditionalism and active participation in the legitimist political struggles of her time.
