Infante of Spain Jaime

Jaime de Bourbon, known as Duke of Segovia and Duke of Anjou, was an infante of Spain and the second son of Alfonso XIII and Victoria Eugenie of Battenberg. His life was shaped by dynastic decisions and by deafness, which led him in 1933 to renounce his rights of succession to the Spanish throne and adopt the title Duke of Segovia. He later became a central figure in legitimist disputes: from 1941 he was recognized by some French legitimists as Head of the House of Bourbon and claimant to the French throne (as “Henry VI”), and in 1964 he was accepted by a Carlist group as Duke of Madrid, head of the Carlist succession to the Spanish throne. Throughout his legal and political life, Jaime sought successive revisions of his renunciations and dynastic reconciliations, ultimately ceding claims definitively in 1969 when Juan Carlos was designated by Franco as his successor. He married Emmanuelle de Dampierre, with whom he had two sons, Alfonso and Gonzalo, and later married Charlotte Tiedemann; his first marriage was regarded as legitimate by many legitimists. He died in 1975 in St. Gallen, Switzerland, and is buried at the Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial. His legacy is marked by his controversial role in twentieth‑century European dynastic successions and by his continuing relevance among legitimist movements.
