Ira Gershwin was an American lyricist whose partnership with his brother George Gershwin produced some of the most enduring songs in English of the twentieth century. Together they wrote dozens of numbers for Broadway, including hits such as "I Got Rhythm," "Embraceable You," "The Man I Love," and "Someone to Watch Over Me," and they collaborated on the libretto for Porgy and Bess, a work that left a lasting mark on the history of opera and American musical theatre.

Beyond his work with George, Ira sustained a prominent career after his brother’s death in 1937, writing lyrics with figures such as Kurt Weill, Jerome Kern, and Harold Arlen. His songs for films and revues — including famous themes for Shall We Dance and A Damsel in Distress — kept him present in popular culture and on the charts.

Author of Lyrics on Several Occasions (1959), a blend of memoir and annotated anthology, Gershwin left an important legacy for the study of the lyricist’s craft in the golden age of American popular music. Known for an ear attuned to everyday life and for great verbal refinement, he established a central role in the history of musical theatre and the American song.
