Isabelle Laure Gatti de Gamond was a Belgian educator, feminist and political activist, known for establishing the first secular and systematic secondary education provision for women in Belgium. The daughter of Zoé de Gamond, a writer and activist, Isabelle formed her views on education through self-directed study and public courses, and in 1862 began openly advocating for girls’ schooling with the publication L'Education de la Femme. In 1864, with the support of the Brussels Municipal Council, she founded the Cours d'Éducation pour jeunes filles, an initiative notable for operating outside the control of the Catholic Church and for opening academic opportunities previously inaccessible to girls. The project faced opposition from the Catholic press but succeeded, attracting prominent teachers and municipal backing that allowed the creation in 1891 of an advanced pre-university section. Retiring from school administration in 1899, Gatti de Gamond joined Socialist Party activism, defending adult universal suffrage, a stance not always welcomed by party leaders. Her legacy remains tied to the secularization and expansion of women’s education in Belgium, recognized in the country’s cultural rankings and local public memory.
