Sir John Arthur "Jack" Brabham was an Australian racing driver and motorsport entrepreneur who was a central figure in Formula 1 during the 1950s and 1960s. A three‑time World Champion in the Drivers' Championship (1959, 1960 and 1966) and winner of 14 Grands Prix, he was noted both for his driving technique and for his engineering knowledge, having trained in metallurgy and mechanics from youth. Co‑founder of the Brabham team and constructor in 1962 with Ron Tauranac, he led the marque to two Constructors' Championships and became the only driver to win the World Championship driving a car of his own manufacture, in 1966. Earlier, he played a key role in popularizing rear‑engined single‑seaters through his work with Cooper, contributing to important changes in racing‑car design. Trained as a mechanic and having served in the Royal Australian Air Force as a flight mechanic, Brabham began in midget racing and quickly rose to the international scene in 1955. After retiring in 1970 he returned to Australia, where he ran businesses connected to engines and workshops, leaving a lasting technical and commercial legacy in world motorsport.
