Jack Bruce was a Scottish-born British bassist, keyboardist, singer and composer, best known for his role in the power trio Cream. Musically trained from a young age, he played with influential 1960s blues and rhythm-and-blues bands such as Graham Bond, John Mayall and Manfred Mann before joining Eric Clapton and Ginger Baker in the project that made him famous.
As a songwriter, Bruce wrote most of Cream’s songs in partnership with lyricist Pete Brown, and helped redefine the role of the electric bass by introducing full-bodied tone techniques and greater melodic freedom that influenced generations of players. After the group disbanded, he collaborated with figures in jazz and rock, including appearances with Carla Bley and Frank Zappa, and maintained an active recording and touring schedule.
His career was notable both for stylistic versatility and for a widely recognized contribution to twentieth-century popular music. In the 2000s he faced serious health problems, including a liver transplant, and he died in 2014. His legacy endures in his technical and compositional influence on bassists and in the classic rock repertoire.
