Jack Robert Lousma is a former American astronaut whose career combined military experience with significant contributions to the Skylab and Space Shuttle programs. Before joining NASA, he served as a reconnaissance and helicopter pilot in the U.S. Marine Corps and flew interceptor and fighter aircraft in Japan, a background that led to his selection as one of nineteen astronaut candidates in April 1966. As a member of the support crews for Apollo 9, 10 and 11, Lousma helped provide the human infrastructure that sustained the lunar flights. His first spaceflight took place on July 28, 1973, when he served as pilot of Skylab 3, spending about two months in orbit with Alan Bean and Owen Garriott, conducting extravehicular activities and contributing to long-duration orbital research. In March 1982 he commanded STS-3 aboard Columbia, the third Space Shuttle flight, focused on flight testing and systems verification, including evaluation of the robotic arm for payload handling. The results helped validate the vehicle’s capability as a platform for scientific operations on subsequent missions. Lousma left NASA in 1983 and moved into the private sector, concluding a career that bridged two crucial eras of American space exploration.
