Jacques Martin was a French cartoonist and comic-book author, best known for the Alix series set in Ancient Rome. Beginning his career after World War II, he collaborated with figures such as Hergé and Edgar P. Jacobs at Le Journal de Tintin and adopted and promoted the ligne claire technique that defined the Franco-Belgian school. His work is notable for its historical research and fidelity of setting; Alix became internationally popular and established Martin as a leading creator of historical adventure comics. He received major awards, including the Angoulême prize for Best Album (1978) and the Saint-Michel prize in Brussels (2003). In addition to Alix, he created series such as Lefranc (journalism), Jhen (medieval architecture), Orion (Ancient Greece) and Lois (the court of the Sun King), broadening a repertoire focused on varied historical eras and contexts. In his later decades he worked with several artists who came to illustrate his scripts due to vision problems. Martin’s legacy lies in the combination of historical rigor and adventure storytelling and in the place he earned among the principal practitioners of the ligne claire, influencing subsequent generations of European comic artists.
