Jacques d'Adelswärd‑Fersen was a French aristocrat, novelist and poet whose literary career and private life were intertwined with scandal and exile. Heir to a fortune made in the steel industry, he became a known figure in Parisian circles and published volumes of poetry and novels, including Lord Lyllian (1905), a work that combines satire, autofiction and references to the famous Oscar Wilde affair.

In 1903 he became involved in a trial that turned him into a persona non grata: accused of indecent conduct with adolescent boys at a series of gatherings described by some as “black masses,” he was convicted and saw his engagement and social standing ruined. As a result, he went into exile on the island of Capri, where he built Villa Lysis, a residence that became an icon of his aesthetic and his affective‑sexual inclinations.

On Capri he maintained an intense literary and editorial activity, founding the magazine Akademos (1909), a high‑quality monthly that introduced French‑language material on homosexual themes and featured notable contributors. Despite its acknowledged cultural role, the magazine survived only a year, likely due to costs and social resistance.

D'Adelswärd‑Fersen’s legacy lies in a literary output that explored homoerotic friendships and loves, in the figure of the exiled dandy, and in Villa Lysis, a lasting symbol of his life and reputation.
