Jacques (Jacob) Presser was a Dutch historian, writer, and poet whose work had a profound impact on studies of the Second World War and contemporary society. Trained at the University of Amsterdam, he taught and eventually held the chair in Dutch History, combining academic work with active participation in left‑wing political debates. His biography of Napoleon offered a critical reading of the emperor as the architect of an authoritarian model, highlighting the institutions that sustained his power. Presser’s international reputation rests chiefly on Ondergang (Ashes in the Wind), an exhaustive investigation of the persecution and extermination of Jews in the Netherlands during the Nazi occupation. The result of fifteen years of archival research, the book balances documented narrative and human testimony while also examining the role of the Dutch bureaucracy in the stages of segregation and deportation. In addition to that book, he wrote a comprehensive history of the United States and other works that reflect his attention to marginalized groups. His personal experience — loss and life in hiding during the war — informs, without sensationalism, a body of work characterized by rigorous documentation and a lasting impact on Dutch historical studies.
