Jacques Prévert was one of the central figures of twentieth-century French culture, working as a poet and screenwriter. He gained wide recognition with the collection Paroles (1946), whose colloquial language, humor and celebration of freedom made him a popular poet included in school curricula. His poetry favors wordplay, sonic devices and traces of surrealism—such as lists and unexpected metaphors—that produce comic effects and double meanings. In cinema, Prévert made a decisive contribution to French poetic realism, writing screenplays and dialogues for films now considered classics, many directed by Marcel Carné and Jean Renoir — among them Le Quai des Brumes, Le Jour se Lève and Les Enfants du Paradis. His collaborations with composers produced memorable songs, such as Joseph Kosma’s Les Feuilles Mortes, performed by Yves Montand. Acknowledged both for his popularity and his formal invention, Prévert left a lasting legacy in French literature and cinema. His work continues to be studied and republished, influencing generations through its combination of accessible language, powerful imagery and restrained social critique.
