James Branch Cabell was an American writer whose fantasy and speculative fiction achieved considerable notoriety in the 1910s and 1920s. A prolific author—he published fifty-two books across novels, short stories, poetry, and genealogies—Cabell was noted for an ironic, satirical style that blended escapism with reflection on the human condition. His best-known work, Jurgen: A Comedy of Justice (1919), became famous after an obscenity trial which, once won, expanded his international reputation. Much of Cabell’s output centers on the so-called Biography of the Life of Manuel, a series of twenty-five works that follows Dom Manuel and his descendants across generations, establishing him within a niche of literary fantasy. Influential contemporaries such as H. L. Mencken and Sinclair Lewis acknowledged his importance, although critical interest waned in the 1930s. Born into a traditional Virginia family, Cabell lived most of his life in Richmond and was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1937. His legacy endures in archival collections that preserve his manuscripts and in the influence he exerted on early twentieth-century literary fantasy.
