James Ensor was a Belgian painter and printmaker of Flemish origin, a key figure in the transition to Expressionism who exerted a strong influence on Surrealism. He spent most of his life in Ostend, where he created a body of work instantly recognizable for its masks, skeletons and carnival scenes—motifs taken from his parents’ souvenir shop and transformed into tools for examining the social mask, farce and political critique. In the final decades of the nineteenth century his provocative compositions, such as Christ's Entry Into Brussels (1888–89), caused scandal and critical rejection, yet also established him as an avant-garde artist. Ensor responded to hostility with satirical paintings and biting etchings that marked him as a fierce critic of the society of his day. With belated recognition around the turn of the century, he began to receive public honors—he was granted the title of baron and distinctions such as the Légion d'honneur—and museums and historians gradually reassessed his work. Although his output lost intensity in the twentieth century, the body of grotesque and theatrical images he produced cemented his reputation as an innovator of modern painting and a touchstone for later generations.
