James Hong is an American actor and voice actor of Chinese descent whose professional career began in the 1950s and has spanned multiple generations. Known for his versatility, he has appeared in hundreds of film and television productions, performing dramatic, comic and villainous roles, as well as frequent voice work. His repertoire includes cult films such as Blade Runner and Big Trouble in Little China, and notable roles in popular animated films and franchises, including the voice of Mr. Ping in Kung Fu Panda and the cynical Chi-Fu in Mulan. On screen he is also remembered for the enigmatic villain David Lo Pan. Trained as a civil engineer, Hong left a technical career to pursue acting; his career reflects both the experience of Chinese-American actors in Hollywood and the gradual increase in representation in subsequent decades. As a voice actor he is praised for his distinctive voice and his ability to create varied characters, remaining active in film, television and video game projects.
