James Levine was an American conductor and pianist of major prominence in the final decades of the 20th century and the early 21st. He became a central figure at the Metropolitan Opera, where he made his debut in 1971, was named principal conductor in 1973 and Music Director in 1976, a position in which he brought the house choir and orchestra to international recognition. He also held conducting posts at major festivals such as Ravinia and led the Munich Philharmonic.
In the 2004–2005 season he took the music directorship of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, becoming the first American to hold that post and initiating wide-ranging artistic projects. At the same time he maintained an intense international presence, collaborating with ensembles such as the Vienna Philharmonic, the Berlin Philharmonic and the Philharmonia Orchestra, and appearing regularly at festivals including Salzburg and Bayreuth.
A versatile repertory conductor, he was associated with works by Mozart, Verdi, Wagner, Strauss, Stravinsky, Debussy, Berg and Gershwin, among others, and led contemporary premieres such as John Harbison’s The Great Gatsby. His career also encompassed teaching and leadership at Tanglewood and performances as a recital pianist.
Health problems marked his final years of activity and led to absences and surgeries. James Levine died in Palm Springs in March 2021, leaving a significant legacy in the operatic and symphonic life of the United States.
