Jan Hendrik Oort was a prominent Dutch astronomer of the 20th century, noted for fundamental advances in understanding the Milky Way and as a pioneer of radio astronomy. His academic career at Groningen and Leiden was established through studies of high-velocity stars, galactic dynamics, and observations that reshaped structural astronomy. Oort showed that the Galaxy rotates differentially, determined that the Sun is not at the galactic center, and formulated the now-called Oort constants describing the local rotation of the Milky Way. He estimated the Sun’s distance to the galactic center and analyzed the vertical motions of stars to infer the mass required in the galactic plane, pointing to the presence of unseen matter. He also identified the galactic halo and made significant contributions to the study of comets, culminating in the proposal of a vast cloud of comets beyond the planets now associated with his name. His legacy includes multiple eponymous concepts and objects (the Oort constants, the Oort Cloud) and helped establish the Netherlands as an important center of postwar astronomy.
