Jane Grey was an English noblewoman of the sixteenth century who, through a political turn of events, was proclaimed Queen of England and Ireland from 10 to 19 July 1553. A great‑granddaughter of Henry VII and daughter of the Duke of Suffolk, she received a refined education in a Protestant household and was notable more for her dynastic position than for independent political initiatives. Under the influence of the regent John Dudley, Jane was compelled to marry Guildford Dudley. On the eve of King Edward VI’s death she was named his heir in place of the Catholic Mary Tudor; proclaimed in London, she was deposed nine days later when the Privy Council recognized Mary. Imprisoned in the Tower of London, Jane and her husband were executed in February 1554. Jane’s brief and tragic life became a symbol in England’s cultural memory: Protestants regarded her as a martyr of the Catholic repression under Mary, while in the nineteenth century her image was romanticized as a Victorian feminine ideal. Contemporary sources on her personality are sparse, and no reliable portrait made during her lifetime has been preserved.
