Jane Wilson was an American painter whose work moved between landscape and expressionism, shaped by formal training and active engagement with the New York art scene. Raised on a farm in Iowa, she carried into her painting a sensitivity to the effects of light and the vastness of the sky—elements that guided her landscapes for decades. A graduate of the University of Iowa, she joined in the 1950s the circle known as the New York School, socializing with poets and painters who pushed her toward a more abstract and expressive language.
During the 1950s and 1960s, Wilson exhibited in cooperative galleries and divided her time between New York and Water Mill, Long Island, where she developed series of landscapes and still lifes. She also worked as a model out of financial necessity, which did not diminish her artistic standing. Her painting is marked by the use of translucent layers, the construction of form through masses of color, and a tension between remembered place and the materiality of paint.
Critics and historians have emphasized the lyrical and elegiac quality of her work, locating her between the inheritance of expressionism and post‑abstract experimentations; she received awards and saw her oeuvre reassessed with praise for later works that place color and light at the forefront.
