João Carlos Molina Esteves, known as Jão, is a Brazilian musician remembered for his role in the early years of Ratos de Porão, a seminal São Paulo punk/hardcore band. A founding member alongside Betinho Massetti and Jabá, Jão was active in the scene from 1981, contributing as vocalist, guitarist and, at times, drummer during internal reorganizations.
His time with the group intersects with key releases and milestones of the movement, such as the festival O Começo do Fim do Mundo (1982), the recording of the SUB split (1983) and the transitional period that led to the pioneering hardcore album Crucificados pelo Sistema (1984). These events helped raise Ratos de Porão’s profile domestically and internationally, including appearances on foreign compilations.
When the original lineup reunited in 1985, Jão continued to play a central role in aesthetic decisions that moved the band toward crossover and thrash influences, trends that marked later records. His period with the group contributed to the band’s prominence and its legacy as a reference for Brazilian punk in subsequent decades.
