Jean Carmet was a French actor and screenwriter whose prolific career made him a regular presence in French cinema and television from the postwar period to the early 1990s. Known for portraying the “Français moyen,” he moved easily between popular comedy—appearing in films such as Le Grand Blond avec une chaussure noire and La Soupe aux choux—and striking dramatic roles, including the unsettling Dupont Lajoie and the murderer in Buffet froid.
A member of the Branquignols troupe from the 1950s, Carmet built an extensive filmography of more than two hundred films and achieved lasting recognition beginning in the 1970s. His voice became well known on radio through his role in La Famille Duraton, and he reached wider international visibility with La Victoire en chantant (1976).
Honored by the French Academy of Cinema, he won two Césars for Best Supporting Actor (Les Misérables, 1983; Merci la vie, 1992) and received an honorary César in 1994. A friend of figures such as Michel Audiard and Gérard Depardieu, he left a legacy defined by versatility, a popular-character profile, and influence on generations of French comedians and actors.
