Jean de Brunhoff was a French writer and illustrator, best remembered as the creator of the children’s series about Babar, the elephant who leaves the jungle and visits a city inspired by Paris. The work originated in a bedtime story told by his wife Cécile to their children; Jean turned it into an illustrated book, published by the family press in the early 1930s.
Between 1931 and his death, de Brunhoff published six volumes that established Babar’s visual and narrative world: classical figures, urban landscapes, and a tone that balances adventure with child-appropriate moral lessons. The early editions saw wide circulation and were later acquired by Hachette, achieving international success.
He died young, at 37, of tuberculosis; his last two books were completed and colored posthumously with the collaboration of his brother and his son Laurent. Jean de Brunhoff’s legacy endures both in the continued presence of the characters and in the series’ continuation by Laurent, who preserved the creator’s style and memory.
