Jean Giono was a self-taught French writer whose fiction focused primarily on Provence. From a modest family background, he worked in a bank until the success of Colline (1929) allowed him to devote himself entirely to literature. In the 1930s he established himself with the so-called “Pan trilogy,” pastoral novels that celebrate nature and rural life, inspired by the classics and by the figure of the Greek god Pan. The traumatic experience of the First World War made him an ardent pacifist and marked his output in the 1930s, when he published antimilitarist texts and pamphlets and took part in the Contadour circle. With the outbreak of the Second World War, his positions put him under suspicion, leading to brief imprisonments and a period of ostracism after 1944, when he was accused—without conviction—of collaboration. In the postwar phase, Giono renewed his work: he drew closer to models such as Stendhal and Balzac, explored the historical and psychological novel, and adopted the stream of consciousness. Among the better-known works of this maturity are Un roi sans divertissement and Le Hussard sur le toit, which consolidated his reputation for portraying complex human beings in historical contexts and for a lyrical, sometimes dark prose. Legacy: recognized as one of the great French novelists of the twentieth century, his work continues to be valued for its portrayal of Provence, narrative force, and the ambivalence between celebration of nature and a critical view of human behavior.
