Jean-Jacques Beineix was a French filmmaker whose work became a landmark of the movement known as cinéma du look. He became internationally known for Diva (1981) and Betty Blue (1986), films notable for their refined aesthetics, intense use of color and lighting, and showy mise-en-scène serving romantic, youth-oriented narratives. Diva earned him four Césars and established his reputation; Betty Blue won international awards and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Over the course of his career he also directed Moon in the Gutter (nominated for the Palme d’Or at Cannes), Roselyne and the Lions, IP5: L'île aux pachydermes and Mortel Transfert, alternating fiction features with documentaries. In 1984 he founded the production company Cargo Films to preserve his artistic independence, serving as executive producer on several projects and collaborating with scientific institutions on documentaries. Recognized for turning technical training into an auteurist visual style, Beineix left a legacy tied to the elevation of cinematic image-making and to his influence on later generations of French filmmakers. He published memoirs and remained active in audiovisual work into the early 2000s.
