Jean-Jacques Henner

Jean-Jacques Henner was a 19th‑century French painter known for his mastery of sfumato and chiaroscuro applied to female nudes, religious subjects, and portraits. Trained at the École des Beaux‑Arts and winner of the Prix de Rome in 1858, he established himself over a career that included works shown at the Paris Salon and public commissions. His output includes well‑known paintings such as Chaste Susanna, The Magdalene, Christ Entombed and The Dream, as well as the widely reproduced image of Saint Fabiola (1885), the original of which has been lost but whose reproduction spawned devotional copies worldwide. He received major honors, including medals and the Grand Prix at the Exposition Universelle of 1900, and ranks within the Legion of Honour. As a teacher and institutional figure, Henner taught in the women’s studio organized with Carolus‑Duran — an alternative space at a time when women were excluded from the École — and succeeded Alexandre Cabanel at the Institut de France in 1889. His influence extended through numerous pupils and models, contributing to the French art scene of his era.
