Jean Louis (born Louis André Berthault) was a Franco‑American costume designer whose work shaped Hollywood’s image from the 1940s through the 1960s. He arrived in the United States in the late 1930s and first made his mark in New York before becoming chief costume designer at Columbia Pictures (1944–1960), a period in which he created wardrobes for a wide roster of movie stars.
His output includes iconic pieces that became inseparable from the actresses who wore them: Rita Hayworth’s black satin dress in Gilda, Marlene Dietrich’s embroidered costumes, and the crystal‑studded “nude” gown Marilyn Monroe wore while singing for John F. Kennedy. About sixty of his costumes appeared on film, and he received thirteen Academy Award nominations, winning the Oscar for The Solid Gold Cadillac (1956).
Beyond the screen, Louis influenced everyday fashion — the “Carnegie suit,” which he created in 1937, became an icon of American women’s wear. Over more than four decades he designed for stars and public figures, leaving a legacy noted for its blend of theatrical glamour and haute‑couture technique.
