Jean-Marie Leblanc is a central figure in French cycling whose professional life has included careers as a rider, sports journalist and administrator. As a professional cyclist from 1967 to 1971 he rode for teams such as Pelforth and Bic, took part in the 1968 Tour de France and won races including the Circuit du port de Dunkerque and a stage of the Tour of Portugal. He left racing while still young and moved into sports journalism, contributing to La Voix des Sports and, above all, L’Équipe, where he oversaw cycling coverage and served as editor-in-chief of Vélo Magazine. Around 1990 Leblanc moved into management of the Tour de France: appointed director of competitions in 1988, he became general director of the race in 1994, a position he held until 2006. His leadership coincided with a period of modernization and professionalization of the event, marked by growth in television rights, commercial revenues and the consolidation of the Tour as the premier spectacle in world cycling. Known for an empathetic stance toward the riders, Leblanc played a significant role in the Tour’s commercial restructuring and in building relationships with major sponsors and media, leaving a legacy in the race’s professionalization and visibility.
