Jeanette MacDonald was an American soprano and actress whose career rose to prominence from the 1920s through the 1940s. She began in Broadway musical theatre and established herself after moving into talking pictures, being discovered by Ernst Lubitsch and achieving international fame with films such as The Love Parade and Monte Carlo.
Over the course of her film career she starred in 29 feature films, including well-known pairings with Maurice Chevalier and Nelson Eddy; several of those productions were nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture. She also recorded extensively, earning multiple gold records, and became influential by bringing operatic repertoire to a mass audience through cinema.
After her screen heyday, MacDonald performed in opera, concerts, radio, and television, and she influenced generations of lyric singers and popular-music interpreters. Her legacy lies both in popularizing the soprano voice in mass entertainment and in shaping a model of musical stardom that spanned stage, records, and film.
