Jeanne Cuchet, also recorded as Jeanne Jamast, is among the victims linked to the notorious killer Henri Désiré Landru, active in France during and after the First World War. Identified in documents connected to the case, her disappearance is part of the list of women drawn in by matrimonial advertisements who never returned, a circumstance that helped prompt the police investigation into Landru. The postwar context, with many widowed and vulnerable women, was exploited by the criminal to recruit his victims by correspondence, resulting in a scheme of seduction, fraud and, according to the prosecution, murder. The inquiry collected letters, notes and witness statements that connected several missing women to the same perpetrator. Although direct physical proof for all the killings was limited by the absence of bodies, the body of evidence led to Landru’s trial and conviction, a case that became notable for its public impact and for the debates it provoked about crime, manipulation and social vulnerability in the period.
