John Jeremy Thorpe was a British politician, Member of Parliament for North Devon from 1959 to 1979 and leader of the Liberal Party from 1967 to 1976. Trained in law at Oxford, he emerged as one of the Liberal Party’s most promising figures in the 1950s and led the party to its electoral high point in February 1974, when the Liberals won roughly six million votes in a hung parliament.
During his leadership, Thorpe navigated a political landscape marked by the decline of the major traditional parties and advocated electoral reform and internationalist policies, including support for human rights and opposition to apartheid. His role in 1974 put him in a position of influence and he was even considered for inclusion in a coalition government.
Thorpe’s career ended amid public controversy when, in the late 1970s, allegations emerged linking him to an alleged plot involving serious crimes. He stood trial in 1979 and was acquitted, but the scandal and lingering doubts ruined his political career and removed him from public life.
In subsequent decades, despite the controversies, his contribution to British liberalism and his activism on international causes have been reassessed by successive generations within the party.
