Jérôme Lalande was a French astronomer whose career was notable for research and scientific popularization in the 18th century. He became known for studies of the planets and for the 1759 work in which he revised Edmond Halley’s tables and contributed to the study of Halley’s Comet, collaborating with Alexis Clairaut and Nicole‑Reine Lepaute on the calculation of its orbit and return date. Over his life he published about 250 articles on astronomy and several reference works, including the Traité d’astronomie and the Bibliographie astronomique (1804), a two‑volume chronicle of the sciences of his time. He also worked outside astronomy, spending a period on hydrology and the study of navigation canals. His influence extended through the education of later generations, mentoring figures such as Jean Baptiste Joseph Delambre, and his renown endures in the public memory: his name is among the 72 inscribed on the Eiffel Tower.
