Jerry Casale (born Gerald Vincent Pizzute) is an American musician, known as co-founder, co-lead vocalist, bassist, and principal lyricist of the new wave band Devo. He rose to prominence in the late 1970s and early 1980s when Devo reached the top 20 with the single "Whip It" (1980) and released influential albums such as Q: Are We Not Men? R: We Are Devo! and Freedom of Choice.
Author of much of the band's repertoire, Casale also directed most of Devo's music videos and worked for other artists, including The Cars, Rush, Foo Fighters, Soundgarden, and Silverchair, establishing himself as a creative force beyond musical performance. His career also includes side projects such as Jihad Jerry & the Evildoers and further ventures in video direction and occasional collaborations.
A graduate in arts from Kent State University, Casale was one of the originators of the “de-evolution” concept that guided Devo’s aesthetic and message, a movement that arose after the 1970 Kent State events. Present throughout virtually the band's history, his legacy is linked to sonic and visual innovation in the rock/new wave scene.
