Jett Travolta was the eldest son of actor John Travolta and Kelly Preston. He was born in 1992 and drew public attention because of his health: at age two he was diagnosed with Kawasaki disease and experienced seizures throughout his life. As a teenager, he died in January 2009 while the family was on vacation in the Bahamas, the victim of a seizure.
Jett’s death mobilized the international media and provoked public sympathy, while also prompting his parents to channel their loss into supportive work. In his memory, John Travolta and Kelly Preston established the Jett Travolta Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping children with special needs.
Although his life was brief, Jett became a symbol for the family and for some members of the public of the need for greater attention to children with complex medical conditions. His passing also represented a significant personal moment in his parents’ biographies, influencing later decisions and philanthropic initiatives.
