Jim McKay was an influential American sports journalist, best known as the host of ABC’s Wide World of Sports, a role he held for 37 years. His opening—recalling that the program presented “the constant variety of sports” and “the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat”—became an icon of American television culture.
Over his career McKay covered twelve editions of the Olympic Games and a wide range of major sporting events, including the Kentucky Derby, the British Open and broadcasts of the Indianapolis 500. He gained international attention for his coverage of the Munich massacre in 1972, when he anchored a long live broadcast that earned him recognition and journalism awards.
A multiple Emmy winner—the first sports broadcaster to receive the award—and a recipient of the George Polk Award, McKay also played a role in promoting horse racing: he founded Maryland Million Day to highlight local Thoroughbred breeding. His legacy endures in professional standards for sports coverage and in the events he helped establish on television.
