Jim S. Abrahams was an American screenwriter, director, and film producer, best known as a member of the comedy trio Zucker-Abrahams-Zucker (ZAZ). Together with brothers David and Jerry Zucker, he helped create hit comedies in the 1970s and 1980s, notably The Kentucky Fried Movie, Airplane! and Top Secret!, films that helped establish the cinematic parody genre in the United States. The trio’s collective success brought awards and influenced later satire and physical-comedy films; some of that standing enabled Abrahams to finance solo projects. He directed his first solo feature in 1988 and in subsequent years alternated widely popular parodies, such as Hot Shots! (1991) and its sequel, with work in television and producing. Over his career he took on projects that lampooned action-movie clichés and gangster-film tropes, maintaining a style defined by absurd humor and film references. His legacy lies in rejuvenating cinematic comedy and in the clear influence on filmmakers and works that employ parody and visual gags.
