Joachim Ernst of Brandenburg-Ansbach was Margrave of Brandenburg-Ansbach from 1603 to 1625, a member of the Hohenzollern family. He succeeded his father, John George, and following the death of George Frederick the Elder helped secure the succession of the Franconian line, establishing the Ansbach cadet branch. He ruled during a period marked by dynastic rivalries and territorial rearrangements within the Holy Roman Empire. Politically, he took a distinct position in the early seventeenth-century confessional conflict, moving toward Calvinism and supporting the independence of the United Provinces. He played an active role in the formation of the Protestant Union in 1608, whose regional headquarters operated in the secularized monastery at Auhausen; the alliance, however, dissolved in 1621 under imperial pressure with the outbreak of the Thirty Years’ War. In 1612 he married Sophie of Solms-Laubach, with whom he had five children, including Frederick III, his immediate successor. His rule and confessional choices affected the political and religious alignment of Franconia and influenced the course of the small territorial nobility on the eve of seventeenth-century European war.
