George Herbert Walker Bush was an American politician, diplomat, and businessman who served as President of the United States from 1989 to 1993. A member of the Republican Party, he built a long public career: congressman, United States Ambassador to the United Nations, chairman of the Republican National Committee, and Director of the CIA before serving two terms as Ronald Reagan’s vice president (1981–1989). A Yale graduate with business experience in the Texas oil industry, Bush brought a focus on foreign policy to the White House at the end of the Cold War. During his administration he oversaw pivotal events such as German reunification, the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the 1989 invasion of Panama, and the 1991 Gulf War, and he negotiated the foundations for the future NAFTA. On domestic policy, he signed the Americans with Disabilities Act (1990) and appointed justices to the Supreme Court; however, he faced an economic recession that eroded his popularity and contributed to his defeat in 1992. After leaving office he remained active in humanitarian causes, and historians and political scientists generally assess his legacy as moderately positive.
