Joachim Murat

Joachim Murat was a French soldier and statesman who rose to prominence during the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. Known for his personal courage and for commanding cavalry, he became notable for supporting Napoleon at decisive moments — notably in suppressing the royalist uprising of 13 Vendémiaire and in the 18 Brumaire coup that brought Napoleon to power. He was promoted to Marshal of the Empire and, from 1806, served as Grand Duke of Berg and — from 1808 to 1815 — King of Naples.

Over the course of his career he took part in major campaigns such as those in Italy and Egypt, the Russian campaign, and the battles of Ulm, Austerlitz, Jena and Eylau, where he led famous cavalry charges. He married Caroline Bonaparte, becoming a member of the imperial family and a beneficiary of the appointments and titles that followed from his connection to Napoleon.

His rule in Naples and his political choices reflect the tension between dynastic ambition and the need to hold a throne in a changing Europe. After leaving the army following the defeat at Leipzig, he tried to preserve his crown, but defeat at Tolentino and a failed attempt to regain power in 1815 ended in his capture and execution. Murat’s legacy remains tied to the image of an audacious cavalry commander and to a central role in the military and political campaigns of the Napoleonic era.
