John Mills was an English actor whose film and stage career spanned seven decades and more than 120 films. He became known for portraying the British “everyman” — often heroes shaped by wartime experience — and for his versatility in leading and supporting roles. His work in Ryan’s Daughter earned him the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in 1971, cementing an internationally respected career.
Mills was also prominent in British cinema from the 1930s through the 1960s, collaborating with directors such as David Lean and Anthony Asquith on films including Great Expectations, This Happy Breed, Scott of the Antarctic and Hobson’s Choice. He produced films, among them The History of Mr Polly and The Rocking-Horse Winner, and received honors such as a knighthood in 1976, a BAFTA Fellowship in 2002 and recognition from Disney.
Beyond the screen, he maintained a steady presence in theatre and television, took part in key postwar productions and helped define a form of British male performance in the twentieth century. His legacy includes iconic performances, influence on subsequent generations of actors and a career marked by popular appeal and critical recognition.
