John Aubrey was an English antiquary, writer and scholar whose work spanned several fields — biography, archaeology, ethnography and local history. He is especially remembered for Brief Lives, a collection of short biographies that gathered memories and portraits of contemporaries, and for recording numerous archaeological sites in southern England, including the rediscovery and mapping of the Neolithic monument at Avebury. A pioneer in the description of megalithic remains, he also left records concerning Stonehenge (the so-called “Aubrey holes”), and compiled collections of customs and beliefs in Remaines of Gentilisme and Judaisme, anticipating practices of folklore study and ethnography. His Interpretation of Villare Anglicanum was the first attempt at a comprehensive study of English place-names. Although his writings circulated little during his lifetime and many manuscripts were only partially published, from the twentieth century his intellectual reach came to be more highly valued. Serving as a link between antiquarian curiosity and emerging empirical methods, he left a legacy as a pioneer of English archaeology and as a compiler of sources for cultural and local history.
