John Bardeen was an American physicist whose work transformed electronics and solid-state physics. As co-inventor of the first transistor, he shared the 1956 Nobel Prize in Physics with William Shockley and Walter Brattain — an invention that enabled the development of modern electronic devices and launched the information age. Later, in 1972, he received a second Nobel with Leon N. Cooper and John R. Schrieffer for formulating BCS theory of superconductivity, which underpins applications such as magnetic resonance imaging and superconducting circuits. With a PhD in physics from Princeton, Bardeen worked as a researcher at Bell Labs and served as a professor at the University of Illinois, combining basic and applied research throughout his career. His work interwove theoretical advances and practical inventions, with direct impact on industry and medical technology. Recognized as one of the leading scientists of the 20th century, Bardeen appears on lists of influential figures and remains a key reference in the study of condensed matter. He is also one of the few people awarded two Nobel Prizes in the same category, a legacy that attests to the originality and scope of his achievements.
