John William Coltrane was an American jazz saxophonist and composer, widely regarded by critics as the greatest tenor saxophonist in jazz and one of the most important jazz musicians and composers of all time. His influence in the music world goes beyond the boundaries of jazz, ranging from rock to classical music.
He was active mainly during the 1950s and 1960s. Although he played before 1955, his principal years were between 1955 and 1967, during which he redefined jazz and influenced generations of other musicians. Coltrane's recordings were prolific: he released about 50 recordings as a leader in those twelve years, and appeared on as many others led by other musicians.
Coltrane received a special citation from the Pulitzer Prize in Music in 2007, for his "masterful improvisation, supreme musicianship, and status as one of the central icons in the history of jazz".
