John Gregory Dunne was an American writer who moved from journalism into fiction, literary criticism, and screenwriting. He began his career at Time and became known for essays and books about Hollywood, including The Studio and Monster: Living Off the Big Screen, as well as novels such as True Confessions and Dutch Shea, Jr. His reporting and nonfiction accounts covered social and cultural topics, including the farmworkers’ strike in Delano. A professional and personal partner of Joan Didion from the 1960s onward, Dunne maintained an ongoing editorial collaboration with her, coauthoring columns and screenplays for films such as The Panic in Needle Park and the version of A Star Is Born. That partnership shaped much of his output and influenced both his critical approach and his fiction writing. As an essayist and critic, he was a regular contributor to The New York Review of Books; his collections Quintana & Friends and Crooning gather pieces that illustrate his observant, informative style. He also served as narrator for a documentary about Los Angeles, showing his interest in the American cultural landscape. Dunne left a legacy as a versatile writer whose work crosses journalism, film, and literature, and whose influence extends through collaborative and solo projects that probe the power and backstage workings of popular culture and the entertainment industry.
