John Francis Helwig was a professional American football player who played linebacker for the Chicago Bears in the National Football League (NFL) for four seasons in the 1950s. A graduate of the University of Notre Dame, he also excelled in collegiate athletics as a shot putter, earning All‑American honors and qualifying for the 1949 NCAA Championships. Drafted by the Bears in the 11th round of the 1950 draft, Helwig’s career was interrupted by enlistment in the armed forces during the Korean War. He returned to the club only in 1953, signing and appearing in 42 games, 23 of them as a starter, through 1956. His career reflects the pattern of athletes of that generation whose sporting lives were affected by military obligations. Off the field, Helwig’s family history attracted public attention years after his death: his wife and later his daughter were implicated in a scheme to improperly collect the pension in his name, amassing more than US$200,000 before investigations and charges. Helwig is remembered as a player who bridged the gap between prominent college football and the postwar era of the NFL, with a legacy tied both to his athletic versatility and to personal circumstances that shaped his public memory.
