John Hodiak was an American actor of radio, stage and film, active mainly in the 1940s and 1950s. The son of Ukrainian and Polish immigrants, he began his career overcoming speech difficulties to become a familiar voice on Chicago radio programs, where he played characters such as Li'l Abner and appeared in serials like Girl Alone. In film, Hodiak worked for studios including MGM, 20th Century Fox and Paramount, alternating between supporting and leading roles. He worked under renowned directors such as Alfred Hitchcock and Joseph L. Mankiewicz and acted opposite the era’s stars — including Anne Baxter (to whom he was briefly married), Clark Gable, Judy Garland, James Stewart and Spencer Tracy. Notable films include Lifeboat and Nine Lives Are Not Enough (1944), Sunday Dinner for a Soldier (1944), A Bell for Adano (1945), Somewhere in the Night (1946) and Battleground (1949). Beyond film, he established a reputation on stage, appearing on Broadway in The Chase (1952) and in the acclaimed production of The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial (1954–55). His radio work was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Hodiak died in 1955, leaving a versatile career that spanned radio, stage and screen during a central period of American cinema.
