John Keith Irwin was an American sociologist and criminologist whose personal experience as a former prisoner grounded a career devoted to reforming the penal system. Author of several influential books — including The Felon, Prisons in Turmoil, The Warehouse Prison, The Jail, It’s About Time and Lifers — Irwin examined the convict culture, conditions of confinement, and the social production of the “criminal underclass” in the United States.
His work combined empirical research, inmates’ accounts, and theoretical reflection to critique punitive practices and propose alternatives such as sentence reduction and rehabilitation programs. In It’s About Time, for example, he argued that shortening sentences was an effective way to address prison overcrowding.
As a professor of sociology and criminology at San Francisco State University, Irwin was also a hands-on activist: he founded Project Rebound, which helps former prisoners enter and complete college, and co-founded prisoners’ movements to claim civil rights. His blend of personal experience, rigorous research, and activism left a lasting legacy in debates over criminal justice and incarceration policy.
