John W. Snow is an American economist, lawyer and executive whose career moved between public service and the leadership of major transportation companies. He became prominent as president and later chairman of CSX Corporation, where he led the consolidation of railroad operations and the transformation of the holding company, serving as president, CEO and chairman until his departure in 2003. In government, Snow held posts at the Department of Transportation in the 1970s, including leadership of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and later advised governments and commissions on regulatory and financial policy. In 2003 he was appointed Secretary of the Treasury in the administration of George W. Bush, remaining in office until 2006. His tenure at CSX was marked by maintenance and operational restructuring decisions that affected rail infrastructure, a subject that prompted criticism and debate over management practices focused on financial results. After leaving the Treasury, he remained active in the financial sector as chairman of Cerberus Capital Management and as a member of significant corporate boards. Recognized for building bridges between private interests and public policy, Snow is remembered as an influential executive in the transportation industry and as a participant in national economic and business commissions.
