Johnny Bush, born John Bush Shinn III, was an American singer, songwriter, and instrumentalist tied to Texas honky-tonk and country traditions. He was noted for his distinctive voice and for writing “Whiskey River,” a song that became a hit on its own and a staple in Willie Nelson’s repertoire. He worked as a drummer and singer in several regional bands before establishing himself with solo recordings and collaborations with artists such as Ray Price and Nelson.
During his career he scored regional hits that reached the national top 20 and signed with RCA in the 1970s. In 1978 he was diagnosed with spasmodic dysphonia, a severe vocal disorder that disrupted his career; after vocal rehabilitation and treatments — including botulinum toxin therapy — he recovered part of his voice and experienced an artistic comeback beginning in the 1980s.
A touchstone of the Texas scene, Bush stayed active with local labels and tours and served as a mentor to later generations of honky-tonk country musicians. He was inducted into the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame and was recognized for his work raising awareness of vocal disorders.
