Johnny Dorelli, stage name of Giorgio Domenico Guidi, is an Italian singer, actor and television host whose career spanned from the 1950s into the 21st century. Trained in music in New York, he began as a crooner and pianist and returned to Italy in the 1950s, where he won audiences with renditions of American standards and light hits such as “Calypso Melody.” He was co-winner of the Sanremo Music Festival in 1958 and 1959 with emblematic songs that shaped Italian music of the era, including “Nel blu, dipinto di blu” and “Piove (Ciao, ciao bambina).”
In addition to his musical career, Dorelli worked in film and television, excelling in comedies and roles that brought him popularity, such as the lead in the parody How to Kill 400 Duponts (1967). His major theatrical success came with the musical Aggiungi un posto a tavola, which had a West End production in London.
After periods of lower visibility, he returned to prominence in the 1980s and maintained an occasional presence in film and television through the 2000s. Known for his repertoire of popular songs and crooner style, he left a legacy within the Italian entertainment tradition from the postwar years to the cultural modernism of subsequent decades.
